NDA 2026: A Complete Guide for Aspirants (Including What to Wear)

The National Defence Academy selection is one of the most competitive in India. Roughly 4,50,000 candidates appear for each NDA written examination. Approximately 7,000–8,000 qualify for SSB. Around 400–500 are recommended. Of those, approximately 300 join the Academy. The numbers are brutal but the process is fair — and understanding it is the first step to surviving it.

The NDA Examination Structure in 2026

The Union Public Service Commission conducts the NDA examination twice a year — typically in April and September. The written test has two papers: Mathematics (300 marks) and General Ability Test (600 marks). The GAT covers English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Events. Total marks: 900. The cutoff varies each attempt and each category.

Who Is Eligible

For the Army wing: unmarried male candidates who have completed or are appearing in Class 12. For the Navy and Air Force wings: the same eligibility plus Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics. The age limit is 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of course commencement. Women are not eligible for the NDA under current regulations — a matter that has been actively litigated in recent years.

The UPSC Written Examination

The UPSC releases the NDA notification approximately three to four months before the examination date. The notification includes the exam syllabus, eligibility criteria, application window, and examination centres. Bookmark the UPSC website and set calendar reminders — the notification window closes within four to five weeks of opening.

The SSB Process — After the Written Exam

Clearing the written exam earns you a call letter for the Services Selection Board. The SSB is a five-day assessment conducted at one of the selection centres (Allahabad, Bhopal, Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Dehradun, Bhopal). It assesses Officer Like Qualities — a framework of 15 personality attributes that the military has developed over decades of research into what makes an effective officer.

Stage 1 — Screening

Day one is a screening process: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT). Approximately 40–60% of candidates are screened out on day one. Those who clear screening stay for the remaining four days. Those who do not are sent home immediately.

Stage 2 — The Full Assessment

Stages 2 covers Psychological Tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SDT), Group Testing Officer Tasks (indoor and outdoor group exercises), and a Personal Interview with a senior assessor. All three streams run concurrently across the remaining four days. The conference on day five is where the board reviews all assessor inputs and makes final recommendations.

What Aspirants Who Get Selected Have in Common

Beyond the written exam, the SSB selects for a specific personality type: someone who leads without being asked, who is aware of their environment, who handles pressure without becoming either passive or aggressive, and who genuinely cares about the group outcome rather than just their own performance. These are not qualities you can fake over five days. They are qualities you build over years — through the way you live, the decisions you make, and the things you care about.

The t-shirt a candidate wears to SSB is a small thing. The mindset behind choosing it is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times can you attempt the NDA exam?

You can attempt the NDA exam as many times as you are age-eligible — the upper age limit is 19.5 years at course commencement. Most candidates get two to three attempts if they start preparing at 16 or 17. There is no attempt limit beyond the age bracket.

What is the NDA written exam cutoff?

The cutoff varies each examination and each category. For the written exam, it typically falls between 250–320 out of 900 marks depending on the attempt. UPSC publishes the cutoff after each result declaration. Aim for above 350 to be safe across categories.

How do I prepare for the NDA SSB after clearing the written exam?

Read newspapers daily for current affairs awareness. Practice PPDT and TAT responses through mock exercises. Work on physical fitness — running, swimming, and functional strength. Most importantly, develop genuine group awareness habits: listen before you speak, lead when the situation demands it, and support others without being asked.

Is coaching necessary for NDA written exam preparation?

Not mandatory. The NDA syllabus up to Class 12 standard is manageable with self-study if you are disciplined. Many selected candidates have prepared without coaching. What matters more than coaching is consistent, structured study over 12–18 months, not cramming in the final weeks.

What physical standards are required for NDA?

The medical standards include minimum height of 157 cm for Army, 162 cm for Navy and Air Force. Vision standards vary by wing. The physical fitness test at SSB is not a formal graded exam but your fitness level is observed through the GTO tasks and general energy across five days.
