How to Dress for an SSB Interview: Practical Tips from Veterans
The SSB interview is five days long and covers indoor assessments, outdoor physical tasks, a formal personal interview, and a final conference. Each phase has its own dress requirement, and getting this wrong — not dramatically wrong, just inappropriately wrong — is a form of situational blindness that good assessors notice. This guide covers exactly what to wear across all five days, with the reasoning behind each recommendation.
The Overarching Principle
Dress for the phase you are in, not for the phase you wish you were in. Showing up to the GTO outdoor tasks in formal trousers is impractical. Showing up to the Personal Interview in PT shorts is a failure of situational awareness. The SSB assesses your ability to read a context and respond to it — your clothing is one of the earliest signals you send about that ability.
Day 1: Reporting and Screening
The journey to the SSB centre may involve a long train or bus trip. Arrive clean and composed. The best travel outfit: dark chino or cargo trousers (not jeans — too casual for a first impression in a military environment), a clean half-sleeve t-shirt in a solid or simple print, and clean trainers or casual shoes. Not formal — composed and deliberate.
After checking in, Day 1 includes administrative processing and the OIR and PPDT screening. For these indoor assessments, the same clean trousers and t-shirt combination works. Stay neat through the day — your first impression of the assessors begins before the official assessment does.

The TAT, WAT, SRT, and SDT are all conducted indoors in a formal classroom setting. The group discussion (PPDT discussion and GD) is also indoor. For these days: clean, well-fitted half-sleeve t-shirt and dark trousers. Not formal, but not casual. Think "composed student on an important day."
Avoid These on Indoor Test Days
Crumpled clothing. Loud graphics or foreign logos. Anything that looks like it was an afterthought. The person sitting next to you in the PPDT discussion is being assessed by the same psychologist. The person who looks prepared tends to perform with greater confidence during the tests. These things are correlated.

The GTO outdoor tasks — HGT, FGT, PGT, CT, Individual Obstacles — require real physical effort. Wear clothes you can sprint, climb, and crawl in without thinking about them: a fitted half-sleeve t-shirt (not full sleeve — restricts shoulder movement on obstacle tasks), dark sports shorts or slim joggers, and good-grip trainers.
Practical Details
Lace your shoes properly — loose laces on an obstacle course are a hazard and a distraction. Avoid trainers with worn soles (slipping during the HGT is both dangerous and embarrassing). No metal-strap watches, jewellery, or anything that might snag on a rope or beam. If your hair is long, tie it back — a candidate adjusting their hair during a group task is not thinking about the group.
The Indian Army joining portal describes the GTO tasks in detail. Read them before the SSB — understanding what each task is designed to assess helps you dress for it functionally rather than guessing.

What is the correct dress for the SSB Personal Interview?
Formal trousers (not jeans, not chinos), a plain well-ironed collared shirt, and formal shoes. The PI is conducted by a senior officer in a formal room. Dress as you would for a meeting with a Brigadier — because that is what it is.
Can I wear a printed t-shirt for GTO tasks?
Yes. A clean, well-fitted printed t-shirt is appropriate for GTO days — as long as it is half-sleeve, breathable, and the print is not distracting or inappropriate. A military-pride design in a solid base colour is a perfectly appropriate choice for the GTO phase.
Should I bring formal wear to SSB even if I am not sure I will need it?
Yes. Always bring one formal trouser and a plain collared shirt regardless of what the SSB call letter says about dress code. The PI requires formal wear in most centres, and arriving without it when required is an avoidable failure. Pack it and have it ready.
Does the SSB provide any clothing or uniform for candidates?
Some SSB centres provide PT gear for the physical tasks — check your call letter. In general, assume you need to bring your own clothing for all phases. The call letter will specify if anything is provided.
What shoes should I bring to SSB?
At minimum: one pair of clean, good-grip trainers or sports shoes for PT and GTO tasks, and one pair of formal shoes for the PI. Sandals and casual shoes are not appropriate for the GTO outdoor tasks. Bring both pairs regardless of how light you want to travel.
